11:38 am: YOU ROCK BARACK!
So, Barack Obama won the presidential election. That was 50 bucks well spent on his campaign. So I say..........

Dear President Elect Obama,

Since I generously donated to your campaign, please, pay me back - with a big decrease in taxes and universal health care.

Sincerely,
Marie (who hopes you make good on all of your promises)

And that's that.

So anyway, I've been watching Life on Mars (the American version). It's not as good as it could be but it doesn't suck as much as it could either. I am a bit indifferent to it. Maybe I should try to watch the BBC version.

This fall its been mostly election coverage for me. Frankly, alot of Daily Show, Colbert and a bit of Bill Maher thrown in. But now that America has finally started voting correctly, I wonder what the pundits will have to say. I imagine Olberman is going to get boring. I might just have to start watching Fox news. Wait, I didn't say that. The seven minutes of FOX news that I caught during the election night coverage didn't indoctrinate me, really. I swear. Oh no. What's that phrase about he who protests too much?

08:15 pm: I really need a hobby
When is Nip/Tuck starting? I am totally dissatisfied with everything on the TV as of late. I guess this is good because it means that I haven't been watching that much TV.

I haven't heard anything about any of my pending job applications which makes me so frustrated! UGH!

10:00 pm: The Alaskan Independence Party Pooper
I consider myself an open minded person. This is why it literally sickens me to know that a crazy conservative crusader could be the Vice President of this country. How could anyone possibly think that a book burning, anti-semite, who wants her state to succeed from the Union be a good candidate? I don't care how many planes she sold on e-bay (none, if you watch CNN) nor do I care about her 20 months of "executive experience". I don't believe for one second that she cares about me or anyone else. This is a woman who has her own adgenda with only her own values in mind. McCain claims she knows who she is working for. That would be true if she was only working for the ultra conservative christian right. This is not a woman who cares about my freedom of choice. This is not a woman who cares if I have health care or social security. This is not a woman who cares if we have a world to leave to our grandchildren. This is not a woman who believes that we should all be allowed to marry the person of our choice. This is not a woman who is working for me.

07:42 am: Okay, here's the deal........
Yes, I know I haven't been around since December. Thanks everyone for sticking around. I actually signed in thinking that everyone would have un-friended me me by now. So, where have I been? I will give you a brief summary.

This past winter/spring I finished nursing school! YEAH!

better yet........

I got engaged in May - the day after graduation. Rob is such a romantic. He proposed at the top of the Empire State Building.....and I mean the very top. We paid the extra money to go the base of the needle. It was amazing and definitely a great story to tell our grandchildren.

Anyway, since I was FINALLY done with school, I decided to relocate to Boston to be closer to my fiancee. I moved in the beginning of June and we are now living together in an awesome little apartment.

Well, I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but this is what I have been up to. Don't worry, this LJ isn't going to turn into some sappy confessional about my love life. I've never been this personal on LJ and I don't really plan on changing. I just figured you all deserved an explanation about where I have been all this time.

So, I will be attempting to post more now that I am settled in and hooked up to the internet. Stay tuned! And again, thank you for your patience!

10:01 am: Finally - an update!
Good news!  Atonement comes out on Friday.

Great news! The semester is over, and, I will finally have time to spend updating my LJ.

Wait, there is even better news.  I passed NUR 232 and I only have three more credits to complete before graduation!

I am going to go do the dance of joy.

12:14 am: Happy Thanksgiving! ( a few days late)
I hope everyone took a few minutes to be thankful.  I know I did.  Things are stressful in my life right now but I have so much to be thankful for.  I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and that you were all surrounded by people you love!

07:06 pm: The Return of McNamara/Troy
Thank god.  Nip/Tuck is back.  I was concerned about how things were going to play out in LA but really, I think the show it still at peak performance.  Prison Break is back as well after a World Series interruption.  Ugh - the World Series.  Let's not talk about it.  You know what I do want to talk about - the mediocre episodes of House this season.  I am really getting sick of  "the team".  Especially the evil girl.  She can go away anytime.  I hate to say it but I am actually a little bored with House right now.  How many weeks until LOST?

12:05 am: I needed a few days of fun........
So, Saturday night I headed up to Beantown for Mandy's birthday celebration at SpookyWorld.  I should probably mention that I have been excited about this for over a month.  It is a pretty cool Halloween tradition.  The drive up wasn't so bad.  I made pretty good time especially considering there was a Red Sox game that night.  When I got there Mandy, her boyfriend Scott, old roommate Rob and Kerry were saving me a place in line.  I was glad to find them at the beginning of the line because it seriously might have been a mile long.  SpookyWorld was not quite as spooktacular as I remember it being but we had an awesome time.  The company I was with totally made up for any shortcomings that SpookyWorld might have had.  We stayed long enough to go through all the haunted houses and for Mandy and Rob to have a Dance Dance Revolution showdown in the arcade area.  Then we left and went to a place called the Sunset Grill where they have like 50 beers on tap and probably the best nachos in New England.  The dinner conversation was less than suitable for a public place but what can I say - you get a few beers in you and you loose you inhibitions.  On Sunday, Kerry and I walked around the city a bit and then we met up with some other friends for lunch.  I have to say, it was a great mini vacation.  I met some awesome people and I got invited to a Halloween party next weekend.  Sadly, I don't think I will be able to go but - I sense some more Boston weekends in my future!

11:15 pm: Waiting for James McAvoy
I have come to the irrevocable conclusion that when it comes to acting, James McAvoy can do no wrong.  I just watched an updated version of Macbeth put out by the BBC.  I have been meaning to see it for ages but apparently the Shakespeare Retold series is quite popular.   Until last week, Netflix was listing it as a "long wait" disc.  The movie itself was nothing spectacular but James - he was utterly amazing.  It was interesting watching him play the bad guy and for that matter, watching Richard Armitage play the good guy.  I don't think I have ever seen an actor act with as much passion as he does.  What I want to know is - what trauma happened in his life that helps him create all those tears?  He makes you feel what his characters feel.  He truly is remarkable.  I guess I am making a life out of waiting to see him films.  First, Becoming Jane, then Macbeth, and now Atonement.   He needs to start making some American films and if he doesn't win a Oscar soon I'm calling the Academy.

06:34 pm: Obama on the Daily Show
During his recent appearance on the Daily Show, Jon Stewart asked Barack Obama how he responds to people who say he is too inexperienced to be President.

Obama said,  "No one had a longer resume than Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld and that hasn't turned out well."

12:14 am: A Question of Faith
I read an article at The Nation today.  It was about a fundamentalist Christian group called Operation Straight Up.  They intend embark on a Military Crusade in Iraq.

I am scared.  Very scared.  Mikey Weinstein (founder of a group the promotes religious freedom in the military) sums up my feelings pretty well.   "Thanks to the influence of extreme Christian fundamentalism, the wall separating church and state is nothing but smoke and debris."  I can say AMEN to that.

I cannot believe that this group has the balls to go to a Muslim country on a  self proclaimed crusade!  WHAT THE  HECK?????

This group is also supplying the troops with a video game based on the freaky Left Behind series.  The game sound utterly disturbing - apparently the virtual soldiers say "Praise the Lord!" when they kill the enemy.  The are NO words to describe how f'ed up that is.

As trite as this may be, I have to quote Kingdom of Heaven.  (This is a part of the movie where two characters are discussing the hanging of two Templar Knights who assassinated Muslims.)

Balian: "So they are dying for what the Pope would command them to do."

Hospitaler: "Right.  But not Christ, I think."

10:06 pm: Movies!
I think that I am going to start posting when I see a film.  Just so I have some kind of record of the movies I have seen.  Has anyone seen Breaking the Waves with Emily Watson?  I saw it a few months ago and I loved it - but not until the last five minutes.  I had no idea what I was watching until the end.  It was amazing.  I am going to watch it again sometime soon.

01:03 am: Midsummer LOST Babble
I noticed a post in [info]lost_geek about Jack.  Basically the author was asking why people dislike him.  There were a great deal of responses - mostly people saying why they like Jack.  I did respond there but the post was from June so I figured I would just compose my response here as well.  Do I like Jack?  As far as I am concerned it's not about "like" it's about respect.  I just can't respect Jack as a leader.  Its not his crying that bothers me, its the whineing. (ie. "Everyone wants me to be a leader until I make a decision they don't like.") Jack is stubborn and he needs to learn the difference between being boss being bossy.   He rarely cares what other people think.  When he makes a decision, thats it.  He is not willing to negotiate.  I think that makes him a poor leader and an even less respectable human being.  Jack has a lot of demons, but he's brought them on himself.  (ie. drinking)  Sadly, I don't see him trying to overcome his shortcomings like the other characters.  Jack sees the world in black and white - and he consistantly makes bad decisions based on this world view.  Having said all this, I would like add that he is the character with the most potential to grow.  Also, I know that he does have many good qualities as well.  It will be interesting to see what they do with his character over the next season.   I certainly don't want him off the show.  The story depends on all kinds of characters to make it work.  LOST just wouldn't be the same without him.

Anyway, I have finished my summer course work in Ethics and so much of what I have learned can be applied to LOST.  Especially what I learned about reasoning.  I have some ideas that I'll share in a later post.

Also, ComicCon is over and spoilers run amuck.  Keep them away from me!
